This is part 3 of the series. If you missed the first parts, everything'll be funnier if you catch up first. You can see part 1 by clicking here.
You can see part 2 by clicking here.

I really enjoyed writing this series. I never can tell if that translates to the reader or not, but I always feel better when I'm moving forward with a series that I think is good. I will say that it's trickier to draw a character laying down with another on his head for a couple reasons. The first is the issue of scale. It was hard to try to get Kyle the right size compared to Casey when they're not next to each other. In the original art, Kyle is actually a 1/4 inch taller than Casey in this drawing, but I'm hoping you won't notice :)

The second reason is that it's harder to get them to both fit without bursting the top of the panel. I just made it... whew...

This one my dad actually came up with the concept of, and I developed it from there. I had one gap in the series and needed a strip and he suggested the idea of having the dad wake up the mom and ask her for a drink...

I brought it to Wendy and she wrote the line where the mom is saying "I'm not your mother." That's what I needed to get to the end. Sometimes gags come in a burst of creativity. Sometimes they come from a community of people who get your characters and know how to write comedy in their own rights. This was one of those :)

This is the second week (of 3) of this series, so if you missed the previous week, and want to catch up, you can see them here:

I think that the drawing of Kyle waking up in the second panel is pretty funny. It was fun to draw anyway. I don't normally show Kyle in his crib, and I don't know why that is. I think the crib helps ground him as a baby a little better.

Waking up for the new baby has been fun. He's a pretty good sleeper, but there are moments when he doesn't want to rest, and it's always funny to me how bitter he acts when you wake him up. We've got a little hypocrite in our midst :)

This cartoon is something I used to do as a kid. My mom would always ban me from waking her up when she was taking a nap, and I'd walk noisily down the hall half-hoping she'd wake up and I could ask her my question. The third panel took several tries. It's more complicated than I expected to draw a character so he looks like he's listening and not just standing there.

As the characters go on, in some ways it gets harder to write, but in many ways it gets much easier, because the characters have a way that they behave. As I was writing these, I just kept reminding myself: What would Casey do next, and then what would Kyle do? Casey always seems to forget that Kyle doesn't really know what's going on. He's a baby. So he puts his hope in an infant who just wants to go back to bed. Also, heaven forbid, Casey just gets himself a drink...
This is the first part of a three week series with a very thirsty Casey and his quest for a glass of water. It's funny to me how the dark strips take about three times as much time, because you have to carefully draw around Casey's hair so that he doesn't look bald... It's a challenge, but I love how they look when they're done. This first cartoon is inspired by a conversation that I had with my oldest last week. It would work with my second also. We could walk out of an Olive Garden and if we stop ten minutes later to get a drink at a Burger King or a McDonalds, he'll be hungry... :)

Life with baby #3 is starting to find a rhythm. It's amazing how disruptive a new baby is to the regular way of doing things. We'd forgotten all about that part of things and for the first few days it really felt like we were losing our days, getting behind on things and losing the inertia of our family, in the way we function and the things that we spend our times doing. Our family Bible reading was suffering, because we just felt worn out and we were getting behind on several other things that we do as a family that are important to us and make up part of our family identity.

About the seventh day, we realized this was happening and began to take steps to fight it, and we've managed to begin to get a new family rhythm that still accomodates the demands of baby, but also puts our family priorities in their place as well. If your priorities are in place, and being acted on, it's amazing how much more peace and tranquility your lives have. As we're starting to get our footing again, everyone's much happier, and as a bonus, we're starting to get a little more sleep :)
My dad wrote this gag. I thought it was pretty good... My oldest and I like to play Chess, and sometimes my second (used to be my youngest, but more on that later) likes to try to play as well...

Only one strip this week. It's been a bit hectic :) Baby Elias joined us on Thursday morning at 8:15. Six pounds, eight ounces. 19 inches long. He came into the world screaming and for the first couple days it seemed like he was determined to keep the streak going... He finally settle down about Sunday afternoon when it was time to go home (I exaggerate), but now he's doing wonderfully and our house is moderately peaceful. Wendy's doing great and the baby is happy.
I thought I'd include a picture for all of you who are curious. I don't know who took this one, but it's the three boys with their Great Grandma Verna. It arrived in the mail and I thought it had good lighting and everyone looked pretty happy (including the baby who can only be troubled to give us one open eye) :)
More to come next week.
I'm not embarrassed to admit that Gilmore Girls was one of my favorite
shows growing up, and Wendy and I still watch it every so often. When I
think of the show, I think of a great mother-daughter relationship,
however when I actually watch the show, they tend to fight a lot more
then I ever remember... Still, it's a great show, and the quick back-and-forth banter is always fun to keep up with. I always justify watching the show because I write dialogue, and there's is so good :)
Anyway, there's a guy on the show called Kirk, who seems to always show up whenever they go into a shop. As near as I can tell, the show didn't want to hire more staff, so they made Kirk the everyman shopkeeper/handyman. I always thought that was hilarious.

So I invented this guy, who tends to show up at the coffeehouses, libraries, movie theaters etc... around town. As near as I can figure it, he must be paying off debt
She's almost never happy. I imagine she's been looking for him for awhile while he does recon work and orders coffee...

I was never allowed coffee when I was a kid. He's probably getting in trouble for that too.

Whenever I do crowd scenes, I like to draw character sketches of people I know. My Dad makes an appearance in this one :)Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632644503591807217.post-88770403853472567522012-06-18T16:46:00.001-07:002012-06-18T16:46:53.693-07:00You can click on the images to make them bigger...
It's a week of doctor and dentist appointments! The baby arrives in about 4 weeks, so that's picking up, not to mention dentist appointments and, our oldest breaking his arm on a trampoline over the weekend. It's just a week of appointments nearly every day.... It's amazing!

Hopefully everyone had a fantastic Father's Day. We did as well. My own father was traveling, so we spoke only by phone, but it was nice anyway. Eleven members of our church are on a service trip to Arizona to the Sun River Indian School for two weeks. It's been exciting to see pictures and see all the cool places they are going. Makes me wish I was there :)
As the new baby gets close, it's interesting to try to reminisce about what it was like to have a little baby around. I'm not sure I really remember, although we had one of my nieces over a few nights ago. She's one, and she was sleepy, but fighting it, and I rocked her and said sweet things and rocked her some more and soon she was out, so I'm feeling pretty good about still "having it" after a few years off. Wendy's been bustling about making stuff and getting our little nursery ready, which is really the corner of our room, but it feels like its own little space now. She's been doing an excellent job!
This is the kind of game that Zachary would most likely come up with and as I thought about it, I kept working on the idea to try and make it turn into something. I originally intended for the idea to stretch out over a whole week, but after I wrote this punch line, I thought that the idea was pretty well done and I decided to leave it well enough alone.

I will add however, that drawing little kids on some sort of bicycle-ish device is harder than it looks :)Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632644503591807217.post-39336028662333336512012-06-11T10:44:00.000-07:002012-06-11T10:44:20.009-07:00

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Our was very busy. We decided to meet friends in Sumner, WA, and then take the remainder of the day and drive to Seattle. It meant 500 miles of driving for the day, but we went for it anyway.

Sumner was the most gorgeous town. While Wendy hung out with her friend, I took the boys for a short tour of the downtown. It was so beautiful and the shops were quirky and interesting. There were many antique shops, with genuine antiques, not 1960's stuff. Real pioneer artifacts: bed warmers and wood stoves and toys made out of carved wood. It was like entering the Little House on the Prarie. As we made our way back to pick up Wendy, I found a museum and we went in. It was a museum about the town, built into a house. They had so many cool things to look at it's impossible to list them all, but the one that stuck in our minds was a washing machine that was a barrel, with a ringer attached. It's amazing how much work it used to take to do things that are completely automated today!
Seattle was great. Our oldest son's been studying mummies as part of his schooling, so we took him to Ye Olde Curiousity Shoppe to look at the mummies they have on display. They have two: The first is Sylvester who was found in the desert of Arizona in the mid-1800's buried up to his neck in the sand with a bullet hole in his gut. We suspect he double-crossed somebody. The other is a TB victim from the highlands of Central America that was discovered in the early 1800s. Both are perfectly preserved and basically blew the kids' minds. Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632644503591807217.post-88725120254087973272012-06-05T12:06:00.002-07:002012-06-05T12:07:12.620-07:00

Ahhh.... a boy and his fish...

Today was a light day.... mostly drawing... so I took some time and I got to help Wendy with the home schooling. It's amazing to see the kids reading and doing somewhat complex math, and to realize that Wendy taught them all of these things. Our youngest is five and is a very strong reader. Our older son still has some struggles, but is amazing at math and writing. It's just very cool to see them in action.
I read a book about creativity recently that stated that there was no such thing as writers block. That being stuck was not due to a shortage of ideas, but rather, was due to have too many ideas and not being able to choose which idea to pursue. The idea made sense to me, and so I started drawing a sketch and putting an idea with it. The results are a bit mixed, but all three ideas this week were a result of starting to draw, without having a firm direction, and then sticking with that idea until it became a finished strip. In the case of this cartoon, I started drawing Casey looking through a telescope. Carter came later, and there wasn't much room for him, so I put him down in the corner, which actually makes me look like a better artist because I have "perspective", but really was an attempt to salvage the strip without redrawing the main illustration of Casey and telescope. My dad weighed in on this idea and helped bring the concept to completion.
We've got barn swallows that have decided to build a nest outside our front door. Right outside. It's been super fun to watch them build it, a little bit each day. The last two days, they've been lining it with feathers and preparing to move in. When you go out, you can hear them chirping from down inside the nest. Soon there'll be baby chicks... This kind of thing is the whole reason we settled in the country. Wildlife right at our front door. The only downside is, there's less moths around to catch for our frog, because the birds keep eating them...Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632644503591807217.post-9753975811675244232012-05-28T20:29:00.001-07:002012-05-28T20:29:41.166-07:00

It's always a bit of a challenge when I have to draw black on black. I'm always concerned that the items are going to bleed together and no one will be able to tell what's going on. This is most commonly a problem with the nighttime scenes and Casey's hair, and the strips always take a bit of time, not just because of all the coloring, but because I have to get things close to the thin lines, but not too close. It's always a delicate balance. This strip posed the problem of him hugging a black object against his black shirt and keeping them separate.
This strip was pretty fun to draw. I always like the ones with no borders. It forces a different kind of story-telling and it's a challenge to keep everything moving and the same size etc... This one was made more tricky by the lack of clothing...
Each of our kids were different when it came to band-aids. Our oldest loved them and would always ask for them, but our youngest was terrified of them. I can easily see our oldest doing something like this...
I don't remember if it was Wendy or I who came up with this one. I'm always punking our kids with some horrible thing that they think is serious, but isn't. I haven't done this, but it's the kind of thing I might tell them to get them all nervous. I can't imagine having to pull duct tape off with all the little hairs getting stuck to it. What a great weekend! I hope everyone is doing well, and that you got a chance to see the eclipse. I watched it through a welding mask yesterday, which is pretty wild. It's too bad that it wasn't a full eclipse where we were, but it was still pretty memorable nontheless. Today's cartoon is in honor of the fact that it's rainy again. Looking forward to sun and summer.
Rock is dead again. It was suggested that I should have Kyle eating the fish, or the tail sticking out of his mouth. Personally, I think it's funnier to not know what happened to the fish. About a year ago, Wendy went to missionary convention and it was just me and the boys for a couple days. After the kids' initial panic that they were going to starve because the only person who knew how to cook had abandoned us, I went and got us a pizza.

What's funny is: Wendy and I used to cook together all the time when we were dating. We were both really frugal and would rather do fun things with our money than spend it on food, so we'd cook and then do a date.

When Wendy had her wisdom teeth out and couldn't eat solid food, I made her a baked Salmon, soft rice and zucchini dinner that she still remembers.

The problem, unfortunately is that over time, I stopped cooking and apparently forgot how.

The first sign was that when Wendy was sick, I made us all Hamburger Helper. We were out of beef, so I swapped it out for sausage. We were out of milk, so I just added in some parmesan cheese. It tasted a little weird, but I'm told it was horrendous. Wendy says she was really glad she was sick, so that she didn't have to eat it.

It terrified the kids and they had a hard time trusting me after that.

So, when Wendy was gone, I decided to prove everybody wrong and make scrambled eggs for breakfast.

I took out the stainless steel skillet and started adding eggs. The problem was, that as soon as the egg got hot, they seemed to shrink and I couldn't imagine it would be enough to fill everybody up, so I added more. And more. And more. By the time it looked like enough, I'd added eighteen eggs. Wendy arrived home in the mist of the debacle and couldn't believe I had no idea how many eggs it took to make breakfast. It took me forever to clean all those eggs out of the stainless steel skillet. It's one of those stories that comes up whenever I offer to cook.

But... the kids were impressed. They no longer worry that their dad can deliver the food. There's PLENTY when dad cooks!!!

And now Wendy's teaching me to cook. Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632644503591807217.post-85788226938439858982012-05-07T06:00:00.000-07:002012-05-07T06:00:07.198-07:00

This was one of those ideas that you come up with and think are
funny, but then there are many changes. Originally, his line was going

I always feel like I get a vibrancy in the pencil phase that gets lost in the inking and coloring process. The problem is that the pencil is too light to show up well in a scan. This week I began experimenting with a charcoal pencil and I'm very pleased with the results. It gets all the life and energy from the sketch, but still feels to me like finished art. I've included one spread that's finished below for your enjoyment and so that you can see what I'm talking about. This is a page that comes about 2/3rds of the way through the Boxes book that I'm working on...
This cartoon sat in my sketchpad for about three years. Whenever I sit in a grocery store signing books, I can see the intense passion that kids have for the truck baskets, and I've written a whole series of gags where kids are treating the truck baskets like the real world. About a month ago, I was at a Thriftway and started penciling out the rough. It was fun, although I'll tell you, the shapes of the carts are fairly unintuitive, and each stores' carts are a bit different, so there was a bit of online research required. More will be coming.
I like strips with Kyle. They're always fun to draw, and the lack of words, sometimes gives me more room for funny sight gags that I don't often do with the other characters. For the record, I don't know exactly what he's being poked with, but if I didn't put lines on it, it looked like nothing, and when I drew little branches on it, it looked terrible. I'm going with a pool cue, or something like that. That's what Wendy thought it was and I try not to argue with her.
Starting this week, I'll be posting the entire week's cartoons on Monday's so that there's one email per week. I'll still include my blog and updates, but this'll make the schedule easier for me and allow each blog to be a little more well rounded. More value to email ration :)

Also, I've had a few people inquire as to how the illustration process is going for the "Boxes" book that I'm working on, so I thought I'd include a completed spread so that you can see some of what I'm working on. This image is from about the halfway part of the book. By this time, the boy has built a large collection of toys and his box is full, then he meets a girl, who also has an overfull box and she becomes the catalyst that propels them both to the end of the story.

The funny thing with this book is that in the beginning, the story is very simple, so the illustrations are simple, but as things become more complicated, the illustrations get more and more complicated as well, so that towards the end the illustrations are epic in scale. This means, of course, that as I go, each one takes longer and longer, so the book never gets done :)

I'm loving the process, though. I don't know when we'll be finished, but the journey so far has been a blast. I'll keep you posted. Hope you all have a fantastic week. Thanks for reading.
It's always fun to draw something where I really get to stretch. It's more of a challenge than you think to fit everything in a panel that's so short sometimes. This was fun and much better than just talking heads that sometimes end up serving the idea the best. We're big walkers in our family, and I still will sometimes hike the kids up there.

I used to have this idea that if I picked the kids up every day, that as they got heavier, I would just get stronger and by the time they were adults, I'd be able to lift 200 pounds.

So far, it looks like I was insane. My oldest is about 50 pounds and after about five minutes on the shoulder, it's starting to feel a bit rough.

My favorite part of this strip is how "Rock" just keeps swimming around, completely unaware that he's supposed to be inspired. The whale was fun to draw. This was one of the funnest ones I've drawn recently.
Every dinner without ice cream is missing something :)

So... we went to see Titanic 3D over the weekend... I know, cue the sarcasm and the hostility. I don't know why, but I really wanted to see it, and I was not disappointed. It was pretty great in 3D. Now, apparently, I'm late on getting into the whole 3D experience. We've only been to three movies in 3D and they've all be re-releases (Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars Episode 1 and Titanic), but they're all movies I would've gone to see in theaters again, simply because I love the theater. The 3D was a bonus, but it was awesome, and the coolest parts were during the scenes where you really got a view of the scale of Titanic. Glad I went, even if my friends make fun of me (you all know who you are) :)
Our oldest used to seriously object whenever our youngest would suck
on his toys. It's going to be difficult this time around. Last time they
both still had "toddler" toys, so it wasn't a big deal. Now we've got
legos galore!!!
Rewatched James Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Dandy" the
last two nights while I was inking new comics. What a great movie!!!
It's old (1942), but it's such a wonderful story of the life of George

When I was a kid and we'd go to a sunrise service, everyone would do the "He is Risen" thing and I could never remember it from year to year, so I'd only catch the last one out of three. I always thought that this is something they should do all the time, not just on Easter... This year I was ready :)
I hope everyone had a great Easter! We had a fantastic weekend visiting family and eating ham. Not so good for the pigs, I guess, but good for us :)Will Robertsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959749905068493518noreply@blogger.com
